San Diego Getaway

Weekend Getaway for Under $150

In need of a getaway, my best friend and I headed down to San Diego for some much need R&R. Our first stop was La Jolla, to get some vitamin D. La Jolla is gorgeous neighborhood located 20 minutes out of San Diego. This beach town stretches 7 miles along the Pacific coast offering great shopping, food and beaches. We brought our lunch from home and had a beautiful picnic relaxing on the sand. After the beach, we headed down to San Diego to check into our room for the night.

We used Airbnb, to book a room merely one day in advance. We stayed the night at Peter & Chiara's apartment. Their place was extremely clean, well decorated, and they were very accommodating. Their apartment is located within 5 minutes of the San Diego ZooBalboa ParkLittle ItalyGaslampOld TownSeaport Village, and the Embarcadero. They graciously allowed us to use their kitchen to cook dinner and lunch for the next day.

The entire next day was dedicated to the San Diego Zoo. The 100 acre Zoo is home to over 3,700 rare and endangered animals belonging to more than 650 species and subspecies. The zoo is also home to more than 700,000 exotic plants. We were able to see giraffes, lions, pandas, zebras, eagles, and the list goes on. It took us 6 hours to make our way through the entire zoo and it was completely worth it.

As two young adults on a budget our goal was to manage this trip for under $150. We were able to do this by using Airbnd to book a room at a great rate of $70. We also chose to bring our own food and cook in the apartment which is a major perk of using Airbnd. Our total cost for food was $50. To keep cost low, we made sure we mixed in free activities with costly activities like the zoo. Our activities cost a total of $48. Gas totaled at $50, making the entire trip cost $218. Divided in half, each of us spent $109 for our weekend getaway. There are tons of cities located just two or three hours outside of LA including San Diego, Laguna Nigel, Palm Springs, and the list goes on. A weekend getaway to any of these locations is doable for under $150 or less with proper planning and smart booking. You can start planning your getaway today.

Any suggestions on where we should go next?
