Salvation Mountain
Leonard Knight’s Salvation Mountain should be one of the wonders of the world. It is a masterpiece dedicated to his love for God. I do not belong to a particular religion, but I believe deeply in the power of God. I have experienced and witnessed the incredible things humans can accomplish when they are devoted to a higher being. People are able to accomplish what would seem impossible to the nonbeliever when they are devoted to serving God. Salvation Mountain is one of them.
Leonard Knight arrived in Slab City in 1984, and over the next 28 years he dedicated himself to the erection of Salvation Mountain. The masterpiece is built entirely of adobe mud and paint. You will find hearts, flowers, and the word love painted throughout the mountain illustrating Knight’s message simple yet powerful message, “God is Love’. You are encouraged to walk along the yellow brick road which will lead you all the way to the cross at the top. Be mindful that the mountain is an evolving piece of art and construction is constantly going on.
Leonard created Salvation Mountain Inc., a 501c3 non-profit, to help maintain the exhibit during the remainder of his life and after his passing. Since Leonard’s passing in 2014, Salvation Mountain Inc. continues to preserve and maintain the mountain for future generations. It is completely FREE to visit the mountain and all donations made go towards upkeep, the site-manager, and caring for the Salvation cats.
This year is all about trusting my creative side and tapping into all of the gifts that God has given me. I am dedicated to owning every part of my personality and my faith in God helps me to stay confident while pursuing my dreams. This trip to Palm Springs was my first of the year and God knew what he was doing when he sent me to Salvation Mountain. I was overwhelmed with so much emotion while I was there and I knew I was exactly where I was supposed to be. Going into this New Year, I already feel like I’m on the right track.
